Do a google search for Neon Tetra Disease or Pleistophora, you'll get a lot of information on that problem. Here's an quick excerpt:

"Caused by the sporozoan, Pleistophora hyphessobryconis, the disease is known for its rapid and high mortality rate among neons. To date there is no known cure, the only 'treatment' being the immediate removal of diseased fish to preserve the remaining fish."

Wild caught cardinals are definitely a better choice as they are resistant to this sporozoan.
You would see their symptoms before they even die in an instant.

i have some neons in my community tank. they are hardy as hell ... it's more where you purchased them and the shops track record

x2.

I haven't lost a single Neon. They're fun to watch and at least in my experience easy to keep. And frankly, they're not terribly expensive fish, so even if you do get a bad batch and lose them, its not like losing a goliath ATF or something.

Just my $0.02. Good luck
