Nervous 12" Silver aro, dithers?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Frozen tilapia is cheaper and it assures all worms in fish are dead. All fish contain some amount of parasites no matter how fresh or where you buy it. Bichirs and cats will go nuts.

Is there anything red or purple that he can see from the tank? I know that whenever I wore a red shirt or purple shirt around the tank my silver would freak out. Any other color he didn't care. But as soon as he saw red or purple it was spaz city.

Ahhhhh $h!t.... His sand is red. I hope that's not the issue.

That could very well add to it my aro and most of my other fish hate red.

Well, there has been some positive development: my aro has started to eat again. I came home two nights ago and noticed I was down to just 2 bala sharks (originally there were 3). Usually I'd be upset, but I'm just glad he's eating.

That same night I stuffed a piece of tilapia with floating pellets in an effort to get it to remain buoyant. Alas, it sank straight to the bottom, but my aro ate it almost immediately! While I'd rather he come to the surface to eat, this is better than starving to death. He ate one more piece of pellet stuffed tilapia last night as well. Hopefully this means his appetite is returning. I do hope to get him eating from the surface eventually, but I think I'll stay the course for now.

Thanks to everyone for the input. I will let you know how he progresses.

Interesting, but unrelated, side-note. I think the remaining bala sharks have paired up. I swear they were swimming in a way that suggested spawning behavior last night.

Very cool, glad hes eating now. He will hopefully eat pellets soon for you. Getting hin eatong was the first big step.

I just had a thought: is it possible that the surface agitation is disturbing my aro? That was the only change I instituted before his personality change. Do they prefer calmer surface waters?

Currently I have my penguin 350 breaking the surface tension, as well as 2 of my 4 FX5 outputs aiming up.

When small silvers can be overwhelmed by surface current, but at 12" he should be fine. You could always try reducing the current though. My suggestion would be to add floating plants to cover about 50-60% of the tank.

Do you have lights on all the time? I had a small silver and it would freak out randomly at night with no lights on. Perhaps the shop had small lights on all the time. I found that the led's I had where too much and just switched to a single bar of the normal small yellow ones, and kept them on all the time, almost like a night light?
