Hi I just got a umbrella net from BassProShops, but is it legal to use in CAlifornia? Who should I contact?

thanks but the handbook and regulation stuff it too confusing for me so I sent a e-mail do DFG.

it's legal in all parts of Florida right?

PM teleost or polypterus, they can possibly direct you to those laws. I doubt it is legal to take gamefish with a net, but probably is legal to net unprotected species and baitfish. I am guessing here.

Hey what's considered a baitfish? Like shad and shiners?
Would bluegill/crappie/trout minnows count as baitfish?

i'll go find those guys right now, thanks guppy

Trout, crappie and sunfish are protected at any size usually, and are not considered baitfish. I am telling you the usual situation, I don't know CA law.

Trout and sunfish are not bait to be taken with nets. I'll not deny that California law is confusing but anything legal to take with a net (bait) cannot be transported alive from the waters edge period. This means you cannot legally take any fish with nets and transport it. You then must observe bait classification if you intend to use it as bait. I live far from California and don't read much on the law there but you should take the time to read it and understand it if you live there.

Sorry about the bad news.

completely ruined my plans..
and a waste of money..

thanks though. better than getting a license taken away for 10years..

just skimmed over that site teleost posted and wow :screwy:
looks like you can use a scoop net to catch lamprey
what i would do is e mail fish and game and tell them what you have and what you want to do or what you can do.
worst case you could see if bass pro would refund if never used. :irked:
or what if it was private property?
laws suck :grinno: and those sound :screwy:

Hey I got a reply back from DFG of CA...

Hi,

No, no throw or gill nets are permitted in inland waters.
