Netting out monster sized fish ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Don't use a half gallon tub to catch 5 6-8 inch piranha.

When I bought my tank it came with the fish, it was 8:30 am and we had the tank down to 1/3 full. I ask the seller if he has a net so we can work on catching them. "Sure" and he pulls out a 3 inch net "I guess its been a while". We ended up getting them all in there with only 2 getting dropped on the wood floor. It wasn't until the last fish that we figured out to put the 5 gal bucket in the tank so they would stop getting dropped. Still had to use the pail but it made the distance shorter so it couldn't jump out.

Week later I figured out the fish store that was 2 blocks away opens at 7 Am.

On the plus side I now use the 3 inch net to scoop out leaves and stuff but it sucks that the fish arn't scared of it. I poke and prod them with it and they don't move when I'm cleaning up. Jerk fish.

I got a couple of nets that are the correct size, but with Jag's w/fry they seem to have got holes bitten in them...can't figure out how that might have happened...When I go to scoop out fry, my Male will swim full speed right into the mesh...they don't care about no stinkin' net I tell ya!...;):screwy::grinno:

Well, my 11" Jack Dempsey is certainly not as big as an Arrowana, but I have not been able to find any nets at the pet stores bit enough and sturdy enough for him. What I do is empty the tank down to at LEAST half -empty, then very slowly (usually takes 5-10 min to catch him) I herd him into a clean plastic bag and lift him out of the tank and immediately place him into another holding container while I do a thorough tank clean. Normally I try not to take him out if its not absolutely necessary. But I think that if you handle and catch fish while they are young, it gets them used to being caught when they are older and *bigger*!!
