Someone gave me some free fishes, 3 very large Oscars. I really dont know much about Oscars, just that I know they are not my type of fish. Well I decided to give them to my friend. When I gave it to him, he told me that the fishes have hole in the head disease. When I looked at the fishes, they just had some marks on their head and that is what I saw. I did not know since I never kept Oscars before. I did not know they were sick. Well our friendship is runied because he thought I was trying to give him sick fishes.

Seems to me you might be jumping to conclusions. That is a sign that h2o quality wherever they came from was poor...it should be easy to fix if its not too extensive right now. No worries.

It's not your fault, you didn't know they had a disease. But you should always research fish first, whether they are free or not.

... your buddy is a dbag, I would understand if you sold it to him sick, and say refuse a refund, but if you gave him fish, as a buddy, I don't see why he could complain... its not like it will ruin his other fish...

Will better water quality and a good diet help? I never had a fish with hole in the head disease before. I know you can tell if there is a big hole in the head but this was not the case.

Well there is more to the story. He gave me a lot of stuff for free before. So I wanted to return the favor and he thought I was trying to give him useless stuff.

+1 for free fish...they were free...they were basically rescue fish it sounds like.

Water quality and diet will for sure fix the problem. Thats all it is.

Sad to say, the water here in Va makes it real hard to spear. HOWEVER, I was thinking about going out to the lake with some dive gear and trying to take down some monster cats.... you down? The larger cats don't run from anything.

I have to say if the time ever comes that I have to never accept free fish I need to get out of the hobby. For me at least a great part of what I do as a fish keeper is the accepting and rehoming of rescue fish.

For example this thread http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=359276 details a rescue I did last night on 6 pacu and a shoal of piranha.

As well I have been able to get some crazy fish because people gave them to me because of my tank size.

Tonight came one of the rewarding parts of my being in this hobby. A woman answered my add for rehoming of the pacu and found out that they would be way to big for her 55g long tank. She came down to my restaurant to see the pacu in person.

We got to talking and I found out that her husband is basically on a severe do nothing regime from his doctor while he is waiting for a heart transplant and she was trying to get some fish to fill up their 55g so that he could have another tank to sit and watch. She told me how he spends 4-6 hours a day simply sitting in a chair in front of one of their 2 existing tanks. She also told me that he really loves their african tank a 75g.

We had a great visit and I was able to fix her up with a good assortment of what will be some very pretty fish when they grow. She has guppies breeding in the 55g right now that she uses to feed the african tank.

So getting free fish is not such a bad thing it enables one to give free fish as well.

If your friend is such a tart they need to give their head a shake.
