im sick of fake plants lol they r tacky :/ sooo i have a few questions.. first tank 20 gallon standard water lowered for golden mystery snails and dwarf frogs.. what plants r best? next tank 55 gallon with 5 inch black con , jack dempsey, tiger barbs, and black skirt tetras.. what plants r best? thanx in advance :)

First, we need to know the most important thing-lighting. Most plants need moderate to bright light(3 to 4 watts per gallon) in order to survive. For example my 15g has 65 watts power compact.

ummm lol well i have alot of lighting on both but i dont exactly know how to check? do i just read the bulb lmao

I may be wrong but won't the Black convict and jack dempsy destroy the tetras and tiger barbs?

they havent.. its prolly a goood chance most do but idk lol.. they only chase each other around?

they even lived with 20 baby cons til i have to remove them from over crowding.. weird i know

How many watts is your bulb? Low light would be if your light was 20 to 40 watts, medium- 40 to 80 watts, and bright-80 to 160 watts. It says the wattage on your bulb. Most plants need moderate-bright light. Anubis is good for starters, it's really hardy, and you can keep it in as low as 1 watt per gallon, so if your light was even as low as 20 watts you could still successfully keep it.

Tigers are pretty tough, tetras I would think would be toast.

i had the exact same situation as you did, i had fake plants all my fish keeping life and just got to hating them with a passion. I didnt want to go "all out" with high light, since most of the fish i have would hate high light, and i didnt want expensive co2. So i started off with just Java fern. that stuff is indestructable, i have around 1.1 watts of light per gallon and the stuff grows like mad. after a while i added some Anubias. same thing, it grows slow, but is also indestructable. this was all without fertilizer or co2. by the way im talking about a 75 gallon aquarium. after this i added just one bottle of DIY co2 to the tank, and started using flourish excel and regular flourish. with that i added some bannana plants, along with some creaping jenny, both of which are supposed to need more light but ive had them for around 4 months now and they are growing great, putting out new leaves and everything. anyway, thats my experience with low light, low tech planted tank. I always stayed away from live plants cause it seemed so hard, but as long as you carefully chose the plants you buy for your tank, its actually really easy

My cichlids killed my java fern.
