Never leave kids alone with a tank...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
^ in retrospect that would have been a wise decision... I just really didn't expect them to break it, at least not that quickly!

I would really have to say get her a new tank put eggcrate on the bottom and get some real lookin fake ornaments and give er a go a second time round.

I try to see kids for what they are kids, I am pretty sure if you got her a second tank and asked her to come get you guys to share her ideas on what she wanted to do and get your help you would be surprised.

I did not read the whole thread so now I will see what others said

I don't mind getting her another tank - I think for now we just want her to learn that just because you break something doesn't mean someone will right away get you a new one.

I've told her that if she really shows interest in the hobby, helps me with my tank and things like that then I'll be more than happy to get her a new tank.

I have three cousins ages 8, 9, and 10 taking care of my 29g, 75g, and 180g tanks back home while I'm away at college. My mom only wants to look at the fish, but wants nothing to do with feeding them/maintaining the tanks.

My cousins, on the other hand, are more than happy to tend to the tanks for $30 a month (I remember when I was their age and $30 was a mountain of money!) I took the time to teach them how to properly feed the fish and perform simple tank maintenance (water changes, rinsing/replacing HOB filter cartridges) and just tend to the canister filters myself during visits home.

No incidents like yours yet (knocking on wood), but I honestly believe that my mom would be more likely than the kids to cause something like that to happen.
