Never trust an Oscar

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Its tough to say. I've heard of an Oscar that killed 3 piranhas. The oscar was given to them as "food" and the owner thought that since he was sickly, he would make great food for them.

Oscars absolutely have different personalities as well as space requirements " elbow room if you will"

Just a couple of observations over the years

Thier personalities change as they get older tend to calm down abit

If you have a mating pair look out the other fish in that tank are going to know it

The trend I have seen is that if the oscars are and grow together I have had less problems I have had 4-6 just fine less than 4 and they seem to get territorial. I have noticed that if they are raised alone the territorial instinct becomes more prominent.

These fish will school abit especially when younger I believe that having with 4-6 at a minimum maintains the social aspect of these fish

My humble opinion is that if your going to have oscars make the decision to have either one or at least 4 probably 5-6 is better. That is not to say you can not have 2 or 3 I just think your odds are better for peace with more.

Think about it these fish in the wild can be found in the same waters as pirahanas -there is strength and safety in numbers. Also speaks to there toughness.

Who and what other fish they will bond with is up for grabs I have a friend who had a large 14" oscar whos buddy was a guppy he would eat other guppies but not him. if I did not see this for myself I would have never have believed it- go figure.

These fish are a gas enjoy them

Thanks hope that helps

Good luck

I recently got myself 2 oscars, a black one and a white (pinkish) one. They're about 2" now and in a tank with 2 3" tire tracks and 13 neons.
I just put the neons in there because they look pretty cool when schooling together.
So far I have not lost 1 neon. I thought either the O's or the TT's would munch them for breakfast! but they all seem to be pretty happy together.

One thing I really like about the Oscars is that they are like dogs. They know when it's feeding time and they know where the food goes in. They also eat from my hand :)

seen that before

O's have different personalities i enjoy them a lot
i have an o with a green terror and whenever they meet its like the clash of the titans

I always have a pleco in with my oscars and have't had an issue with either killing the other, however, I always make sure the pleco has at least 3-4 inches on the oscar when I first put it into the tank.

my 16" pleco was 9 inches when I first added him in with my 12" tiger who was only 5" at the time.

instantly the tiger went for the pleco, the pleco used its size and girth to its advantage. it sucked onto the side of the oscar and dragged it down to the bottom of the tank. the oscar taken by surprize got free and hid beneath the filter outlet. that seemed to set the tone.

the pleco never exerted his dominance unless the tiger started it. and the tiger was never able to dominate the pleco.

size and aggrestion matter with oscar tank mates. if you have a particularly passive pleco (they are passive by default but will show aggretion over the good sucking zones with other plecos), don't put it in an oscar tank.

Oscars are really territorial no matter what you think, they attack pretty much anything that hits the water, but if it manages to escape/hide for a few weeks the oscar gets used to it and lets it be :P

my first oscar lived with one of his feeder goldies (this was before i heard of this website) for 2 years, then one night bit him in half. right in-front of my 3 year old cousin. lol

Relationships in the animal kingdom are not easily predicted...

Dogs and cats can occasionally coexist or even be good friends. Usually it has to do with factors like habit and learned behavior as a fry. If you grow up with another species you will fairly used to them until they mature and change.. Sometimes never causing a problem, other times resulting in disaster...
