My grey birchir has always been fine with small schooling fish and baby cichlids. So I thought I would get some angelfish. I saw my birchir bite an angel and go crazy and it ripped it's top fin off! I put the 2 angels that have a chance at surviving in my 6.5 gallon(temporary). I put the dying one in my 2..5 so it can at least die in peace. Lesson learned, NEVER trust your birchirs!!!!

birchir is about 4-5 inches.

angels are about 2 inches.

Well duh!
If it fits in there mouth they will eat it.
Wait until your bichirs get big.

It didn't fit in its mouth, the birchir just bit its fin off. Will a full grown birchir eat a thick bodied 4 inch blood parrots beacause I am worried?

It does not even matter if it ACTUALLY fits, they will TRY. The victim can die of trauma or exhaustion while the predator might die of suffocation. That is why the general rule is "IF IT FITS, IT EATS." A poster in another site even put it this way: " Their eyes (an Oscar this time) are bigger that their mouths/appetite." referring to an Oscar that tried to swallow a sailfin pleco. Up to us to do the sound decision to not mix them or not. Question is, did he bite the angel out of curiosity or hunger? Seems suspicious to me.

Haha! My vatf was eaten too by an endli.

I had my 12" ornate eat a 4" fat flash zebra catfish lol. Oh I was livid. The ornate didn't touch my demonsoni...

Bichirs are funny fish.
I had a 10" bichir with a 2" ebjd once......ebjd once was going after the same piece of food as the endli and I watched the little guy get nicked by the bichir a tad....but it lasted in that tank for 3 years and grew to a nice 6" size with that bichir around
meanwhile, that same bichir devoured about 10 different rainbowfish all larger than a 2" ebjd, I'm talking full grown rainbowfish here too.
Yet, even now when he is a 15" monster, he is fine with a small little 8" albino senegal bichir...so I feel like its just a bit of mix and matching with your specific bichir.

I wish i wouldve read this months ago. Mine was fine with fish as well and within a few weeks time i watched him try to eat my african aro and my mbu puffer. The puffer died "somehow". I was so upset i left it in the tank (i know i shouldnt have) and when i came back he was being devoured by a 6 inch ornate. I was trying to see if his jaws came apart like snakes do...anywho...he was rehomed :banghead:
