One time, one of my 9" endli which I just bought ate the about 3.5" leopard catfish. The endli can not swallow it, so only the head part of the cat goes in the mouth and stayed that way. it's like a fish sucking on a lolipop.
had a camera with me that time but I was freaked out that I felt sorry later for not getting some shot of the situation. true story!

I've been waiting for something like this to happen in my tank ... I've only the one senegal bichir (5 1/2" - 6") and I was hoping he'd devour the few fish that were in the tank. But I'm starting to think he's off all live foods now ... (I'd stopped feeding him live foods for awhile there). I've 2 platy's and 3 cherry barbs still in the tank from when I established it, as well I've added 5 ghost shrimp about a month and a half back, and my bichir has left them all alone. So like it was previously mentioned you never know.
But it has helped build my confidence about putting African Butterfly Cichlids in my tank like I was hoping.

Mine have never eaten any fish, but i have also never really tempted fate....But i have thrown in ghost shrimp (as feeders) a few times and within seconds it is an insane feeding frenzy, so your comment really surprises me. I put 30 in one time and they were gone within 5 mins....

My 2 senegals one regular one albino are doing great in a 40 breeder with other fish... And i got small firemouths and convicts... Its been ok for about a year now but i will watch out...

5" CB Endli tried to eat a 4" BGK.

This BGK is now around 10".

My endli at 5" ate all neon tetra (about 90 of them), all espei rasbora (about 30)..at 7" ate all corydoras (10), at 8" all congo tetra (4) and small 3" black angelfish (5) and today at his 9" i had to rescue 6,5" farlowella acus because he was swallowing it :)

Now he ran out of fishes, he picks pellets :)

So yes..NEVER trust a bichir! :D

It's had me puzzled as well ... When I first got my bichir he would eat ghost shrimp and fish .... but then all the LFS's around me ran out of ghost shrimp for about 2 or 3 months right afterwards. So when I ran out of shrimp ... I just kept feeding him frozen shrimp brine, shrimp pellets and frozen bloodworms. (his favorite seems to be the shrimp pellets but only one brand ... the minute its in the tank, he's after it). When some of the LFS's starting getting ghost shrimp again ... I bought 20, threw 5 in with the bichir (hoping for a show) ... that was over a month ago and they're still alive today. So I'm thinking my bichir might be off live foods now (kinda dissapointed) ... but I wouldn't expect this from any bichir. I just got lucky or unlucky, depending on how a person looks at it. I was really hoping he'd pick off the platy's and cherry barbs, but I guess I'll have to remove them someday on my own.
