NEW 100US Gallon DIY tank stand....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
One caution about MDF. Make sure that ALL of it is VERY well sealed. Water will work it's way inside it and desolve it. This can happen real fast. I have a tank and hood I picked up in a tank deal that this happened to. The stands ok...I spray coated it quickly enough but the hood had a few new screw holes for the new lighting and door supports. In a few months it was unusable and is now sitting in the back yard waiting for the bulk trash pick up.

Did you glue the frame or just screw? Do you need to drill holes for the screws or is the wood soft enough to get the screws flush with my dear old friend force?

Don't worry, I'm well aware of how bad MDF is when it gets wet! All surfaces triple coated with matt varnish (mahogany stain). And I intend to be quite careful with spillages etc.- this is my living room show tank after all! But nice to see someone's paying attention!

You could glue it, but with the CLS, there's not much of an advantge as it's a dressed timber, so it's smooth and doesn't absorb the glue very well. ALL screw holes were pilot drilled and countersunk. DON'T try to force it or you could split it. Oh yeah, get a screw gun - makes life a lot easier! Try Screwfix Direct - I got an Erbauer from there and it's done the job easy! I think I used 3" or 31/4" screws for the frame- can't remember! Don't go too long on them as they will sink in a bit with the contersinking and if you use a screw gun....
The MDF is essentially non structural - it does add some stiffness to the framing and helps keep everything square - it was attached with a PASLODE brad nailer, but you could just as easily do it with panel pins. I was bloody lucky to have access to all the professional tools I needed on site. Made things much easier and quicker.

I love it - I'm not far from my 39th birthday (next Feb.) and someone calls me a youngster! That's me happy for the rest of the day!

You could M&T it, but theres not much point as butt jointed and screwed like this is strong enough.
You could do it if you wanted to cut down a little on materials, but you would only be saving a length of CLS at around £2 a pop, and giving yourself a whole load more work.
(By the way - I've asked every joiner, site agent and projects manager I've met and not one of them knows what "CLS" stands for!!)

If you've got any more Q's, fire away and I'll do my best to help.

I love it when that happens...

B&Q Chipboard screws do the job, countersunk, pozi cross head, zinc plated. 3 - 31/2" will do.....

Screw gun? Cordless drill/driver......
