Just got back from the LFS with all the the new additions to my 10g tank I have setup for breeding.

4x Guppies (2 males and 2 females)
4x Balloon Mollies (2 males and 2 females)
2x Common Algae Eater (not meant for breeding, just to help clean the tank)

How long does it usually take before Guppies start breeding in a new tank and how long does it usually take for Balloon Mollies?

I know these are beginner fish but I have just recently wanted to try breeding fish so I thought these woudl be good to start.

Umm, your going to want 3 males per female guppy. I suggest just guppies in one tank. Especially if your a beginner at breeding.

The guppies were probably breeding in the bag on the way home. Mollies might have waited till you got home. Seriously it dont take long. Just keep the water condition relatively good and the temp right and you wont have any problems.

I assume with "common algae eater" you mean a common pleco? If so they wont keep the tank clean they are dirty little buggers that quickly become dirty big buggers. Not that great at eating algae even, but they will eat up all the leftover food. Not good for a 10g tank though.

nononononono you need ( and i mean NEED ) 1 MALE guppy for every 2 females same with the mollys *thumps self on head* jeez just take back a male guppy and a male molly ( mollys get way to big for the 10 anyways ) but if ur keen on keeping the molly then 1 male and 2 females will do and take back a male guppy and get a female ( ur molly MAY try to breed with the guppys and visa versa )

it wasnt a pleco it looks more like a loach and its only about 3/4" but it was under the name common algae eater

guppies cant live in saltwater and use 3+ females to male males will always be ready to breed and have been known to chase a female to death

Guppies can live in saltwater. They are not quite as easy to convert as mollies, but it not exactly hard either.

If you really want it to live in salt though it is best to do it with very young guppies and put them in a tank that you gradually increase salinity. Since you threw it in a lagoon though I dont think you too concerned with acclimation :P
