New 12' Tank!!

Wow great tank bro!!!!
I think it looks awesome with all those canisters..
Just wondering what thickness glass they used on the tank and was it built in that position or transported after being built?

doesn't matter. Yes he probably could have filtered the tank with just 6 filters and been fine but he's using 20, it doesn't do any harm and he is exceeding the minimum, isn't that what this site it all about? going above the average.

Didnt get a chance to read the entire thread...., BUT..., it seems as though you should have just drilled some wholes for a wet/dry.... I think it would have been more cost effective and versatile. Maybe the glass is tempered.... but if not that what i would have persued...,justmy2cents..... good luck..., by the way that tank is just begging for some rays........

he didn't drill the tank because he isn't familiar with sumps and wanted to use canisters because he was familiar with them and liked the idea of having the stand full of canisters. i agree though, some rays would be interesting.

Is the tank 12' or 15'. It was originally posted as 12, then he changed the length to 15. It looks 12.

He has three choices for filter maintenance on the 20 canisters:

1 - Clean all 20 every 6-8 weeks
2 - Extend the cleaning time beyond 6-8 weeks for all 20
3 - Set up a rotation where he cleans a few every 6-8 weeks

If he goes with 2 or 3, the solid waste will be decaying in the system for a longer period thereby reducing water quality.

I am starting to move away from canisters and more towards the high-capacity HOBs, and possibly a Dry-Tower, because of the ease of cleaning. I leave my canisters go much longer between cleanings than the HOBs because it is a pain to clean them (pain all being relative to available time, desire, and how much the wife complains about the mess I make cleaning the canisters).

Well to each his own. I'd love to have the tank, but if it was mine, I'd probably run a lot less canisters. Even if you only have to clean them once every couple of months, man that's going to be a big job cleaning them all at once... so likely you'll wind up cleaning 2-3 a week... if you only had 6 it'd be less maintenance. But like I said, it's an awesome setup. If you got another large tank it would be easy to cycle with a few spare cans

I was thinking about putting 4 FX5s on my 579 gallon but cringed at maintenance. With my wet/dry all I do is pull the socks, rinse them, and replace the floss and pad. I can do the whole thing in about 5 minutes. With a single fluval 405 I spent 10-15 minutes per canister.
