New 120 build

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
hey nice build, glad there are no leaks!
are you gonna add a background?

I tried to apply the background from my 75 to the new tank. Didn't work that well. I'm going to have to buy another one.

On another note I thought my blue lobster (cray fish) escaped from my temporary holding tank. I went to feed them in the new tank today and suddenly a mobster appeared. Good news. I guess he hitched a ride on one of the rocks when I moved them.

Looks like it coming along nicely, I am a huge fan of the dimensions, keep us updated!

This is the first time I've drilled my own return on a tank above 30 gallons. It's ridiculous how quiet the Herbie is when you have a gate valve. You can't even hear water trickling over the dull hum of the danner return pump.

I'd like to thank jcardona1 for inspiring the build with his 190 discus tank. If you haven't seen his thread about it you should check it out. It's a super simple clean build with some crazy DIY stuff going on. I'm already planning a 6'x3'x2' acrylic tank I'll build myself for when my wife and I find a home to buy.

Update may 13th 2012

Using established water and media is the way to go. Registering as close to zero on all parameters as possible.

It's really hard to get a good tank shot, because at any one time only half my fish are visible. My 4" gold nugget pleco only comes out at night, and my 7" royal is always cleaning the rocks. My blue lobster (crayfish) is growing. I haven't seen a molting yet, but he has grown noticeably larger. My fry are hitting 1" and I tried adding one to the main tank. They aren't big enough yet. It still amazes me how fast one of my loaches has grown. I bought 3 for 30 at 1.5" in September and one of them is a solid 5". The other 2 are the same size, with one just being fatter than the other. They are from the same hatching so I don't know why one decided to go all hulk but I won't complain. Colors are continuing to show up as everyone grows and matures. My leperanis has been the fastest growing fish as he has put on a full inch in 30 days. I decided to build my own filter sock holder for the 55 gallon sump and it turned out nice. The upgrade from a 75 has gone so smoothly I have been given permission from my wife to build a monster acrylic tank when I have saved up enough "fun money" I plan on using a 6 foot 220gallon as a sump. So that size monster. I plan to practice welding acrylic by building a custom sump. I'll post the build once I settle on a design and buy the acrylic. So now that this tank is established its time to move on to the next project.
