Picture using this as a tank without the wood box, now do you see how much it will flex, if the box isn't dead tight against the acrylic a seam could pop.
Ruoghing up...facing the sheet of acrylic, sand 1/4" in from the edge to give a good surface to adhere to, since silicone doesn't bond to acrylic.
That's a good budget for this tank, did you get your acrylic pricing from several places? Sound a little high...
