I recently got a 125 gal tank I want to set it up for a arowana. I would like to get any helpful info as far as filtration and sump tank, this is my first big tank so I want to do it correctly.
I have just setup a 40 gal feeder tank with mollys for when the aros tank is setup and ready
Thanks guys

Well ultimately I figured in a couple years I would get a 300 gal tank when the aro gets bigger wouldn't that be sufficient for the aro? I have done some research on them but this is why I joined this forum I really enjoy fish and wanted to try somthing more exotic the biggest fish I have ever had was a Oscar she was 3 inch when I bought her and grew to 10 inches I had her when I was 12 had her till I was 18.

So I want to setup the 125 as best as possible for the aro

Ok that's good. Aros like a diet high in insects . To help the aro feel secure keep some visual barriers at or above the surface such as plants, leave room at the top and middle of the tank for your aro to swim, make sure he can't jump out

Ok cool thanks so where would be a good place to look for suggestions for filtration for the 125 gal

Mike,

An arowana of any variety won't do well in a 125 gallon tank for a long period of time. It is however a great interim size tank while you train it on the food you intend to use long term etc.. After the 10" mark (a few short months for most arowanas) If this is a grow out assume you will need to upgrade the 125 gallon within a year (depending upon the species of arowana you select) as most grow rather quickly when properly cared for.

As an example I am growing out a leichardti arowana in a 120 gallon (48x24x24). Within a couple short months he is at 10". He is moving to the 330 gallon (72x36x30) next month. When (and he will) outgrows the 330 gallon, he will go in the 500 gallon for life. Most members just care about the well being of the animals and want to make sure you are planning around it's future needs, that's all. When planning for the future: assume that most arowana species need a tank greater than 24" front to back for life.
