New 125 gallon or 180 gallon!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks for the advice.

Sorry I'm changing my mind SO much, but the tank could also be over 180 gallons. I really like arowana too, but I REALLY hate re-homeing and giving away my fish. I've heard that a minimum tank size for a silver is 125 all the way to 350 gallons! I need to get a tape measure and compair size... see what I would go with. Could I put an arowana (silver ideally) in a 180 gallon?????????????

THANKS!

Aro in 180? yes, up to 18 inches or until it outstretches the smallest dimension of the tank or starts bothering the other fish.

5 discus in a 45g is too much. might stunt there growth. i think you should either sell the discus and get whatever big fish you want in the new tank or move the discus in. or take a gamble and move the discus in and buy some big fish you want also. but i prefer to keep the tank with same similiar type of specie than mixing them up kinda throws everything off. or you should get 2 big tanks, one for your discus and one for your monster fish.

Yeah, you can grow an aro out in a 180, but in my experience, once they get big enough to start felling cramped, they get jumpy, and will on occasion try to jump out of the tank.

For what it's worth, in my 4 decades of fishkeeping, I've kept many, many species of both fresh and saltwater fish. There is nothing more rewarding as keeping, breeding, and raising discus. For my money, I would get the bigger tank and expand my discus collection.

You could keep discus with suitable arowanas and rays. I've seen it done on many, many occasions. Black arowanas are the best to do it with though, as they are smaller than silvers and slightly more peaceful. However they are a tad skittish, so may stress your discus.

Rays don't pose a great problem, the only problem I could see is discus annoying the ray. The best ray to try this with is either Retic or Antannae ray. Both being small. The retic would probablt be better seeing as it is more commonly available. Antannae rays being harder to find and not as hardy.

I totally agree with Eric :)

Most rays and some arowanas work with them..Smaller polypterus work, the needlenose SHOULD work..:)
