So I just set up my first freshwater tank after being out of fish for a while. It's a 125 TruVu acryilic with built-in overflow and a 40 breeder for a sump. Built my own stand, canopy, and wet-dry for it. It was running crystal clear until I put a large amount of wood and rock into the tank. It became very cloudy with a green tint to it right away and seemed to get worse over night. I washed it all really well before putting into the tank. Could this be tannins releasing from the wood? Whats the best way to get rid of it? I just did a 50% water change and it accomplished nothing. Will adding some carbon in bags to the sump help clear the water? I was thinking Boyd's Chemipure since it comes in mesh bags already? Any advice is appreciated. I don't think it has been running long enough for it to be a bacteria bloom, and it was the instant I put the wood in the tank so I'm assuming that's the problem.

If your problem is from the wood, the tannins release a brown coloration, it's usually clear, but brown. If your water is cloudy, it might be from the rocks or some other issue.

Yeah it is brown. I added a whole bunch of carbon in separate bags that I made out of nylon mesh and zip ties. I also added more fiber pad filter material to try and filter some of this out. The filter material I had collected some because when I took it out to rinse it, a bunch of dirty water mixed back into the sump water. I have a feeling this is going to be a LONG process! I'm afraid to add more Kent Pro Clear because the bottle says not to use it more than once per week. Anybody know how harmful it is to use it again within a week? It says you can double the dose at one time but not to use it more than once in the week.

50% water change and then another 3days later..........The cloudy weather in the tank is the cause of the movement of the fresh bacteria in your tank that is disturbed..............

So you think this may be also associated with a bacteria bloom then? I just thought that it was no coincidence that it was within 5 minutes of the wood being added, but it could be bacteria as well I guess. The tank has been running with fish in it for four days so I guess it could be that. I was thinking it was too soon but I just read that the bloom usually happens within a week so... Thanks everybody, so if it's a bloom how long do those usually take to clear if I do 50% water change every couple days? I forgot all this stuff, I was into saltwater and reptiles for so long I can't remember all this basic stuff lol!

no bacteria bloom, just tannins being released into the water. Keep doing regular water changes and it will go away. Boiling the wood for a time before hand would help with this as well.

Not sure, one piece was unmarked and the other three were big pieces of 'Mopani wood' from Zoo Med. I'm guessing Africa? That sucks, guess I should have soaked it first, it's gonna take forever to get rid of this mess. 50% change today did nothing!
