I got a new 125 gallon and I only have a dual hang on back filter. How this thing work? Do i run it all day and night or will it burn out? I also got an old canister I could setup, but if I got maybe like 2 or 3 fish in there cause i dont want it to be permanant setup yet will that be ok? (just using the han gon back)

It depends on what the HOB is rated for but I would do the canister since you have one laying around. You'll get more mechanical filtration and biomedia in the canister. Can run both at the same time that'll likely cover the tank better. Keep ur water changes up if you keep the HOB only.

You can run them 24/7 but I would add a canister or at least airstones to eliminate dead water spots on other side.

So what do you guys recommend as filtration for a 125 freshwater (doesnt have to be tip top just functional. and i dont do a lot of fish). Im a big undergravel filter guy, but im lookin to switch it up for a change. On hand I have a weak powerhead, canister filter that I dont feel like setting up and a decent sized hang on back filter. What more could I add for cheap.

I run 2 sunsun hw-304b plus a xp3 on my 135. I bought the sunsun for $80 ea. Free shipping. Large capacity and cheap. Works just as good as my xp3 for a lot less $$.

build a small over head sump and connect canister to it, more bang for the buck; I've used plastic dishpans with either overflows or bell siphons that rest on top of aquarium and gravity feed back down.
