New 125g tank. Help please

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
for a 125:

I'd go with a Fluval FX5 canister
and 2 200w aqueon pro heaters

Of course, it all depends on your stock but I'd say that would pretty much cover the basics

Its mostly gonna be an hrp tank. Im sharing this tank with a friend and he likes tetras a lot so it'll be my hrps and his tetras(dithers) lol. Is one filter enough for that tank? I think the dimensions are 72x20x18

It's the setup I have running on my 125 and seems to handle my heavy load just fine. What kind of tetras and how many of each fish is really what its going to depend on.

Most likely you'll be fine.

I think i have 12 1" hrps and 8 bigger ones. Then he has rummynose, red eye, the others are like the same size and just fight with the other tetras. He probably has 40 or 50. They get ignored by the hrps. They mostly chase each other.

20 HRPs and 40 to 50 rummynose and like size tetras is quite a bit overstocked, you could probably get away with it with like 50% water changes twice a week as well as maybe adding some more filtration.

Thats not lightly stocked at all (at full size atleast). I'm sure it will handle it now but you'll most likely run into problems down the road when your fish get larger.

Someone please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

IME... it sounds like you need either another or a bigger tank.

Im just growing out the small ones to give away. Ima keep the big ones to myself. Probably keep 3 pairs. The dithers will stay. I have a 40g and a 10g for the fry.

Yeah, I'd go canister filter all the way. You can't go wrong with eheim, but I hear the fluval fx5 is also really good. I know it's the most bang for your buck. I personally use 2 eheim 2217 on my 150g tank, although I've been told u should add a HOB also..
