The red terror will be the slowest grower out of them all. The jag can grow anywhere from .5" to 1" or more a month depending on its dominance in the tank. I've never kept freddies, texas, or rds though but I think the average is about .7" a month until hitting 7"-8", then the fish really slow down to a few inches a year then they slow even further as they age.

Because of the growth rates, I think you'll definitely want to get a red terror first before the others. Next would be the texas, freddy, jag, and finally the rd; all listed in terms of likely-hood that they won't snap and kill everyone else in the tank. Be prepared to switch and replace fish as well.

Get 5 gulpers... :D I'm not sure anybody can answer this for you. Do you like red wolf fish? How do you feel about polypterus? Catfish? How many of what size are you looking for?
10x12" fish? 30x3-4" fish? Need more info...

I was looking at doing bigger fish.
It would be nice to have 4-5 12" cichlids and then maybe some other monster like a payara scomb or something. A wolf fish would be cool but the only ones I have seen in real life always just sit in the corner of the aquarium. Maybe that would change if it was put into a tank where it can actually swim around a bit.

I was thinking about getting a good sized ornate bichir or something as well, but I don't consider bichirs to be the real "eye catcher" that I am looking for.

I wish I could find something with the attitude and hardiness of an armatus but doesn't get too huge for my tank.

maybe a native tank? some catfish could fit well in that tank like maybe bullheads.i don't know how much attitude, but i know from fishing experience they are hardy.check the native section

Nah not interested in native fish. The fish don't have to be hardy, I just know scombs (which would have to be my army alternative) don't do the best in tanks.

If you can make an upgrade in a year you could do a silver arowana. Possibly a vittatus tigerfish...
