You do have some coverage on your basic HO4 renters insurance policy.

Your policy would pay for any property damage (building owner) for which you were legally liable. You policy would pay up to the specified liability limit on your policy.

For your property, you would have coverage for anything damaged by the discharge of water from a water holding vessle. The aquarium itself would not be covered, only what is damaged by the water being released. The only way you would have coverage for your aquarium itself, is if it was damaged in a fire.

For those of you with exotic, expensive, or rare fish or corals: There is absolutley no coverage for pets or animals. There is a specific exclusion listed in both the HO4 tenants policy, and the HO3 homeowners policy for this.

Renters insurance is CHEAP!!! Typically around $90-$125 annually for $20,000 of personal property coverage, and a $100,000 limit of liability. I strongly urge any of you renters with large aquariums to purchase a HO4 policy, depending on which company your auto insurance is with it may even entitile you to a discount there.

Sorry to hear about your mishap, and best of luck to you.

Sounds good, definitely going to look into the insurance even 500 bucks a year would be worth it to me for peace of mind. thanks for the post!

Wow, I had this happen only once in a 55 all glass tank, it just out of nowhere started to leak. Luckily it was on a cement floor.

The I also had a 110 gallon tank crack on the side, I think it was my own fault though as it was not level.

Since then I have gone to wood tanks with glass fronts, no issues yet with them and they can flax and bend and you only have to worry about the front glass and if it starts to leak, which one did long ago, its a slow leak, not a gusher as the framework holds the tank together.

But crumby deals on the mess. I know though when my electric cat shocks my 3 foot lungfish he goes nuts, not crazy nuts though, the only fish I have that does that are my 12-14 inch irrdecent idiot sharks. lol They will bounce off the walls over and over again.

What a nightmare! I don't want to imagine what your apartment looks like right now! I've had a 20 gallon and a 10 gallon break, but all THAT water! Wow!

I'm so sorry!

a 3' Lungfish is practically a 3 foot muscle.. If the tank wasn't built or sealed properly, a riled up lungfish could probably cause it to bust at the seams. I have heard of all sorts of big cats, pacus, and other skittish fish slam tanks with bad seals open like that.. Old tanks are susceptable to this as well. The way you explained it, the Lungfish being on the floor might be a good indicator of how the seam began to split..

I could just picture it.. a bored stingray decides to chomp on the 'feelers' of the Lungfish, causing him to starting thrashing around the tank and blast into the corners, eventually jumping out on the floor and weakening the seams in the process. Just a thought!

thought it was a worm! :swear:

that would suck so bad

I recently overflowed my 20g during a water change for 5 minutes and that was messy enough. I can't even begin to imaging what 100+ gallons of water on the loose would be like. I hope the clean up goes as smooth as possible.
