im not really used to african cichlids, i was wondering how many and of what would be best for a 15 gallon, i would like ones that stay very small, but have some variety of color, i also want to know if it would be ok to put my clown pleco in with them

You might want to look into some apistogramma (dwarf cichlids) They're from South America, I don't think there are too many (if any at all) Africans that stay small enough to keep in a tank that size.

Agreed, 15 gallons is too small too keep africans. They are too aggressive and it will end up badly. South American dwarf cichlids are more ideal for smaller tanks. They have lots of color too, such as apistos and rams. I think it's a better idea to go for the dwarf cichlids.

If you don't have room for a 48" tank then a 36" 30 gallon would be a better choice than a 29, a longer tank will allow for more "territories" as Africans are very territorial fish. Start with some Yellow labs maybe, they're not nearly as aggressive as other species.

Yellow labs would be perfect because for their unaggressive nature. Some vic species go well in 29's. I've kept some Hap Ruby Greens in a 29 before. They are very peaceful and are great since they aren't very aggressive. But as stated, if you want peacocks or aggressive mbunas go for a 3 ft tank or a 4 ft tank if you have access to any.
