New 180 gal setup, FX5 v.s Eheim 2229

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Howdy,

Have you thought about an Eheim 2260?
I honestly wouldn't worry about the $$$ for a filter. The fish you put in the tank will cost much more, and when we're talking canister: Bigger is Better.

Get all the proper filtration first. The fish you want will make the filter seem cheap!

If you are going to be keeping rays, go with a wet/dry. I have no personal experience with rays, but from what I have seen on here all ray keepers have wet/dry filters.
I have had a 180 with a few arows and pbass with a fx5 and I had to add a wet dry just to keep up.

What do you mean with "keep up"? Was it floaties or water parameters that caused you to boost filtration?

With all ceramic rings in the baskets of an FX5 a 180 gallon tank would have to be GROOSELY overstocked to need any additional bio-filtration. I know of 240's running FX5's with no trouble at all.

A wet/dry filter is a nice bio-filter to be sure but it's NOT the end all and be all of aquarium filtration by a long shot.

proper set up is as importiant as what equipment you choose.

The water would get cloudier than I would have liked. Once I added the wet dry along with the fx5 I had no problem.

Thank you for your honesty. I believe you are the first FX5 user who openly states that the FX5's bio-capacity is insufficient for a well-stocked /\/\onster tank. All others keep saying it's the silver bullet...

I am the first to admit that some Eheims also have their flaws, such as that my 2080 is not suitable for large tanks, either. My next try is a 2262 on my 220gal as single means of filtration. We'll see how that works. There has to be a canister out there that's up to the task. But I may have to add a second... who knows

i would go for the pro3 over the fx5,it costs more but in the long run it works out cheaper because of the lower runing costs(watts),i have both the fx5 and the pro3,the pro3 is by far the better filter

What kind of stingrays are you getting? Sounds like you will need LOTS of filtration and water changes with this fish combo!

I agree. May want to purchase both fx5 and Eheim 2229 with that stock.
Need to stay on top of water changes even with both filters. Rays produce a lot of waste. Just my opinion.
