Just made the jump into monster tanks.
Acrylic (round edges) 240G by my estimates 72 X 24 X 30. Has an overflow and came with a sump. I don't think I'm going with the sump because my neighborhood is prone to power outages.

How many cannisters can I get with just that little hole in the back?

Do you think the background will be easy to get out? I can just cap the ends on the bottom and make sure there is room at the base of the stand right?

Lots of questions, my first monster tank.

Since you already have the sump you should use it. All you have to do is pull it right and you dont have to worry about power outtages. As long as you have something to stop the syphon of your return lines and the water level you run in the sump will determine if it is going to overflow or not.

what do power outages have to do with using a sump? if it is set up correctly you should have no more problems with a sump, than a canister.

For a tank that size the sump would be you best choice as the primary filter.

Thanks for the comments/tips guys.

I understand that the sump would be ideal, and I knew many people would say to just use the sump. Being new to sumps in general I would prefer to try one someplace other than my bedroom. I have too much $ in electronics to flood the place and although it is a slight risk, it is a risk nonetheless.

I was looking into a fluval FX5, but was wondering how wide the in/out tubes are, looking to see how many can fit into the space allotted for the overflow.

Anyone ever dealt with a background like this before? Should I just snap the pieces off and take them out little by little, or would that leave a mess on the bottom/back of the tank?

I may actually keep the background and fill in the small cracks with artificial plants. It would be a shame to break it up without looking at it filled.

Anyone know how/where to get the plumbing for several cannisters when there is only a small outlet in the back for the overflow?

a fluval FX5, and a penguin 350 should be good if sticking with FW...if salt, same setup, only add a skimmer ;)
overkill or not, better safe than sorry
and as for the background, I like the rock setting...

Do you think a fluval FX5 and an XP3 will be enough for a well-stocked tank? From what I've read I should be okay, but any info from owners would be helpful.

Should be enough, try it. You can always change things around later if needed.

you can't buy plumbing for a situation like the one you are in, you have to make it up as you go along. at this point since you only have the opening for the overflow your best bet is to drill into the top of the tank near the back so you can place the intake/returns in the tank where you want them.

but honestly, for the cost of doing that, you could set up an awesome sump and your chances of overflowing would be 0. just set up your sump so that it is filled to a level that will accept the water in the tank if the power were to go out.

what i did on my 240gl (dual corner overflows) was set up two separate 40gl sumps, one for each overflow. then filled them to specific level. then pulled the power to the pumps to simulate an outage. worked like a charm and didn't have any problems.
