New 240G acrylic, filtration ideas?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
How big is the sump? If it is any decent size at all you wont have enough residual overflow to worry about.

I vote for the sump simply because it's better than any canister IMHO.

Thanks for the responses guys. I am hoping the 2 cannisters will fit AND be enough.

wright4lfe: The acrylic is pretty thick, it would probably be a PITA to cut another access hole. I was thinking I may just squeeze both cannisters into the overflow hole and have a powerhead on the opposite side of the tank.

Anyone have a link to a sump building guide with pics? Tried searching, but there's a lot to look through. I like the idea of a sump, but also don't really have the space, the tank is tall and will be going on a pretty short stand, I'm not sure if there is enough room.

if your overflow pipes are positioned right and return has a air hole it is impossible to over flow your sump i tried this on my 90 and did a test on my 220 wich is same dimensions as yours with 2 overflows and was unable to overflow my sump

Go to a decent LFS or fellow MFKers house and have them show you. It's hard to explain but once you see it in action it will all click. Its really simple when you see one in operation.

isnt there pvc connectors that water can only go 1 way?? im about to setup a sump and am worried about the same thing!!! whay is the name of the connectors or valves???

Check Valve. You can also drill a small hole in the return right below the water line. It will break the back siphon on the overflow side.

Check valves.

I want to see a pic of that thing filled with water. I'm a fan of those preformed backgrounds. They may take up a lot of space, but they add a lot of depth. A little aquascaping can go a long way and that one looks classy to me. Fake rockwork with real dirftwood and some java moss....

If you don't go with a sump, run an FX5 with an AC110 or an Emp 400 loaded with mechanical filtration.
