you know there's all that sand and rock in the ocean? all the bio media.. that (in miniature) is a fuge.. they are also used for keeping more delicate (or bully) fish and breeding copepods/other inverts

and some of them just flat out look cool

they sell HOB fuges that are like 7 gallons and they say they are for like 70+ gallon tanks

so i don't think there's really a ratio.. just kind of a 'smoke if you got em' type of deal..
a 10 would be FINE especially on a 30
