So a co-worker offered to sell me a squarish 35 gallon with filter and lights for $50 (they're family is short on cash) and I'm considering setting it up for 2 fish with the intent to move the fish when I get a larger tank. Currently I'm think about a red severum and a chocolate cichlid.

How would these 2 get along and for how long would they be good in a 35 gallon? Again I intend to move them to a large tank later on, this is not for life!

Both fairly docile fish, but they wont last long in a 35. Especially square 35. How big are they currently?

Hey,
nah I would not keep a Heros or Hypselecara in such a small tank.
It might be ok for Microgeophagus or similar .
Right now I am keeping 1,1 Heros sp. gold in 55 gal but I´ll replace the tank with a 75 gal when they reach 15cm.
Especially Heros might get to an point where they start getting very territorial .
That´s why I had to put them out of the 118gal tank .

Some times I have a feeling people don't even read the whole post... Anyways, they'll both be small, under 2". How fast do they grow? I'm used to JD and GT growth rates.

Hey,
I know it would be temporary ;)
But even for let´s say a few month I would not recommend keeping Heros/Hypselecara in this tank because a square with 35gal cannot offer enough room if the fish do not harmonize.
Compared to Cryptoheros the growth rate of Heros is very low when they get to ~10cm.
I´d recommend keeping about 4 juvenile Heros untill there is one pair.
A permanent tank for 1,1 Heros sp. should be 120x50cm.

Prefer no pairing. If I was to do this tank it'd litterally be 1 red severum and 1 chocolate. If they grow too fast then it isn't a viable option but I'm planning on a larger tank in the next year or so so they'd move up to my 55 and my fish in my current 55 would move up to the 125.

youll have to size up pretty pretty quickly. i dont know about typical growth rates of chocolate cichlids but ime they can grow pretty quickly. and they can be pretty aggressive too.

It's a no go anyways... The "35" was actually a "15"... Poor co-worker got scammed when she got it and just isn't the brightest... Good thing I am =P

Probably a good thing for the fish, sev and a choc more than likely wouldn't have lasted the year out in a 35 square with correct feeding & maitinrnce.
