People may disagree but in my experience, fish definitely grow faster with more room so if they were in something smaller im sure it would be a much slower growth rate than usual until upgraded. You wouldn't want to stunt the fishes growth either so probably not the best idea until you have the new tank to do a quick upgrade when they need it.
