New 400 gallon Freshwater setup

I'm not sure what all the fx5 hating is about. This isn't the only thread you posted your jabs/jokes about using a bunch of fx5s, because of the "coolness" factor. Canisters work good for some tanks. I'd say for sure on a tank that size a sump is the way to go though. I'd use the bean animal setup in my opinion. No offense to jcardona, but don't just stick with only looking at his setup. Go to reefcentral and read through the bean animal thread to get a better grasp of how to set it up. Jcardona had mentioned having trouble getting his syphon going on restart from maintenance or power outage. You wouldn't want your client to have to deal with that issue. Probably just has his pipes too long. They're only supposed to be submerged about an inch. It's also suggested to use 45s instead of 90s in the plumbing to not create bacpressure. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Filtration would either be something designed on a grand scale or I would use several Eheim 2262 filters.

Aaronb, thanks for the input. I have been reading of RC and have just converted one of my old acrylic reef displays last night to the beananimal setup. Super easy and ultra quiet. I will try to get some pics up on RC and here of that conversion.

Nothing against the fx5's at all. Just the fact that people want to wreck a nice show piece like this w a bunch of junk hanging all over the tank, and the fact that ppl think anything from 55 on up should befilterrd by as many fx5s as you can afford. Then to top it off by saying this guy is wasting a monster tank because the choice of stocking? Just too simple minded for me

I know what you're saying. It's all personal preference though, so what's right for one person doesn't have to be for another.

I do agree about the stocking thing. I didn't see anywhere that he asked opinions or ideas on stocking, but there had to be some jerks who felt compelled to give their opinion. I guess that is unfortunately to be expected when using this site.

I'm not sure that making jabs about some peoples filtration choices is really any different than giving unwarranted opinions about someone's stocking choices though.

Yeah, the issue on my setup was that the pipes were submerged too deep into the sump. After hacking them down a few inches, the system starts up like a dream. And I turn the pumps on every day for water changes. Been running great!

Yeah, using canister filters on a tank this size is not even a feasible option IMO. It would require several canisters to provide enough flow in a tank that size, and the maintenance is a pain. I'm sure the client would get sick of having to lug out those massive canisters filled with water every few weeks. Sump is the only way to go.
