New 480 gallon tank. What to put

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If you're leaning towards Africans, then I assume you have hard water. Central America has a lot of cichlid and shoaling fish options for hard water. Pearsei for a centerpiece, firemouth cichlids for the bottom movement, and very large shoal of swordtails or sailfin mollies. Heck if you don't mind mixing continents, replace the swordtails with colorful Boesemani rainbow fish for color and movement.
Wow thank you I love the firemouth that will most likely make it into the tank so will some Boesemain. won’t swordtails or mollies get eaten?

If you are set on getting haps go for it I think two shoals of synodontis cats with them would look great. Just be sure to post pics because it sounds awesome
Already started taking pictures of all the supplies coming in. Going to to a tank thread, but the tank won’t be here till around the first week of November. I can’t wait biggest one I ever had was 180 gallon and all I have now is a 60 gallon. Also never had a tank with an overflow looking forward to being able to run a sump.

I know I don’t want and Arrawana or any big red tail catfish. Really wouldn’t want anything over 15 inches at the absolute max and would much rather have 12 and smaller. I’ll look into that and that was perfect that’s exactly what I’m looking for I don’t need exact fish just kind of a broader thing that I can search and start to narrow down what fish I want the main things are color and activity
This is such a great approach, your fish will be so much healthier and happier. Biggest fish in my 450 is a tad over a foot and all my fish live long lives even with my mistakes

How about some frontosas? They look like saltwater fish. Very elegant. You can also put other African cichlids with frontosas.

And congratulations on getting the new tank. Its a big tank you having.

Your tank dimensions are great for Rays.
what else can you have with rays? my wife was on the not to happy when i told her about the 360 gallon tank that was coming ( did not tell her its a 480 gallon, or what it cost, just told her it will be here in 2 months lol ) her only thing was she wants movement and color.

Anything thats not vicious but large enough not to fit in their mouths basically would work... especially being bottom dwellers, a lot of mid and upper level water fish would work well... only problem with rays is you’ll need to have very good filtration as they are said to be some of the heaviest waste producers...

As for the wife, i think you better have a nice gift ready just before the tank arrives, this way if she flips out at you for a larger than expected tank, you’ll have something to make up for it right away ;)

Lol Lying to the wife is never a good move. You better hope she’s not reading this right now. Definitely buy her something nice before the that tank shows up.

With a tank that size, I hope you are running a sump? For a ray tank mate I'd go with a top dweller. Seen many incidents with rays and other bottom dwellers.

Issues with the spouse is common, when I got my 220, I assured her it wasn't that big. Oh its slightly bigger than my 100g. Then some guys came to set it up, and one of them climbed in to glue the plumbing. The look on her face..

Then on Friday night during a WC I slipped on water and dislocated 2 fingers. Told the doc my fingers don't hurt but my ears will when I get back
