Ok...why not just have 2 AquaClear 70's instead of one 70 and a canister filter?

Canister filters are more expensive than HOB. Ideally you would have 2 canister filters. Swapping for a HOB is a cheaper alternative.

Again, HOB are NOT bad filters. Canisters are just more efficient than HOB.

I would get a AC110 over 2 AC70. 1 AC110 would be cheaper than buying 2 AC70s.

Sorry for my ignorance but I live in an area with very few aquarium hobbyists so even my local pet store is no good when I have questions. Filtration is a tough decision...I definitely need something that wont be much of a mess to maintain. I am looking to have some current in the tank so would it be best to do the AC110 with a jet of some sort or do you need a canister filter in order to have a jet in your tank for current?

If you want added current in your tank, you can buy a powerhead. It's basically a submersible water pump you put in your tank to create currents (it's also vastly cheaper than buying an additional filter). You don;t need to get a large powerhead for your tank. A powerhead with a GPH of 150 would probably be enough. http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2752212&lmdn=Fish+Filtration+&+Circulation

Also, if you want, you can add a sponge filter to the powerhead to create more bio-filtration. Here's an example: http://www.americanaquariumproducts.com/images/graphics/spongefilterflow.jpg

Hope that helps.

I've been told that the AC 110 is the way to go...nothing else needed. I plan to add a powerhead also with a sponge filter.

Also...I plan on having at least 4 different breeds of Africans in the tank

IME - if you are using sand as a substrate - don't use HOB filters.

I think 6 species in a 55g is a mess. Larger groups of less species would be better.
