New 55 Gallon Stocking Questions!!!!

Hello everyone! This is my first post on this forum!

I recently purchased a 55 gallon aqueon starter kit. I am currently doing a fish-less cycle right now, but i really need help on what to stock! I want a Central/South American cichlid tank. Please give me some tips! I want to do this right, i have done so much research on everything but this stocking thing has got me stumped. lol Also i have some other questions? sand or gravel? fake or live plants? But my biggest thing is stocking please give me suggestions!!

I would go with gravel, it's more easy to clean IMO, as for plants it would depend on the fish your going to put in it, and i would get a 1 flower horn for the tank, with some sort of pleco.
 
Gravel or sand can depend on the fish, too. Some prefer one to the other. Have you considered fire mouths, or geophagus, or gymogeophagus? There are several options. All you will get here is a list of people's favorites and the occasional debate about what can fit in a 55. You need to find the fish you want.

2-firemouths
1-convict
2-3 angels
4-swordtales

that could be all wrong but thats just what i was thinking?!?!?!
 
swordtales meaning livebearers are not going to work. and the angel may get beatin on by the firemouth and convict.
 
I have swords in my 125 with an ebjd, Nic, severum, and geo iporangensis and never had a problem. I had mollies in my angel tank with no problems except too many babies were surviving so I moved them to my 125 a week ago and so far no bullying or babies.

but i think instead of the jewel what about a blue acara?

no since the jd will get 1 ft plus the salvinni will hit around 7 inches as the firemouths.
