I agree. You can do a GT in a 55 for life. Obviously bigger is better, but one would be fine in a 55.
I keep my male GT in a 55 with 2 pictus cats, 3 tiger barbs, and 3 giant danios.
Filtration is one AC 110 with an AC110 sponge, 9 pot scrubbers, and one bag of AC ceramic rings. Ammonia and nitrite never go over 0, and the water is clear as long as I clean the sponge part of the filter every other week. I also do 50% w/c per week. Just a singly AC 110 is fully sufficient for filtration for this stocking/tank size. You could use a canister filter in conjunction or only use a canister filter. It's really up to you. But know that a single AC 110 is sufficient.
But I also have extra tanks if anything ever happens to get too big, or something is not working out.
