I've got a 55 gallon tank i just bought and am looking for suggestions. so what would you guys and girls do with an empty tank that size...already have some sa/ca cichlids so i'm definitely looking to do an african tank. any ideas?????

I'd go tangs. Sand substrate, rocks and some nice tangs. Go maybe 10 Cyprichromis Leptosoma and some shellies, that'd make a nice tank.

I would go with some Malawi mbuna. Lots of color choices and really most are really easy to get your hands on. Sand bottom, or gravel works too, and lots of rocks that form caves are all you need. Here is a list of mbuna and a couple tank example, not mine by the way.

1 Cyphotilapia frontosa “Burundi”
1 Cyphotilapia frontosa “Kavalla Island Congo”
2 Altolamprologus compressiceps (Gold)
3 Altolamprologus compressiceps (Yellow)
4 Altolamprologus calvus (White)
1 Altolamprologus calvus (Yellow)
2 Julidochromis transcriptus
2 Chalinochromis brichardi
1 Neolamprologus brichardi
1 Neolamprologus buescheri
1 Tropheus Moorii “Chipimbi”
3 Lamprologus meleagris

That's what i would do with an empty 55. then i'd make plans to upgrade the tank to a 125.

awesome, thanks for the suggestions guys...i really do love the altolamprologus and will definitely be making them a part of what i do...love the frontosas also, how long would i be able to keep one in a 55??

Yah they are slow growers so if you get the fronts I suggest getting young ones but once they grow up you'll have to get them a bigger tank - so if you dont plan on getting at least a 125gal althought If you plan to stock up on fronts then I suggest a minimum 180gal. then I would stay away from the fronts. Tangs would def. make a cool tank here are fish I would consider (I wouldnt throw them all in a 55gal just pick what you like): both alto comps and calvus would be cool along with, Tropheus Duboisi, Ectodus descampsii (stay small though so maybe not), Neolamprologus brichardi, Xenotilapia, Cyathopharynx foai, Cyprichromis leptosoma, Chalinochromis sp. "ndobhoi", Neolamprologus helianthus, Neolamprologus leleupi, Neolamprologus olivaceous, Variabilochromis moorii.

they are all Ashricans

I'd go with several of the neolamprologus species, the altolamps. maybe some psuedotropheus species.

I would have to agree, go with some Malawi mbuna. In the 2nd pic the greshakei is amazing when the male really gets his colour brightened up. I have one and his pale greyish colour goes almost translucent when he starts to shake at his female.
With these fish you can actually pick out a good colour variation that will give you quite an amazing tank of fish to look at. I would go with a sand/fine coral mix and lots of rocks. Add some Valisneria for some greenery. Will from time to time need to be replanted as they will pull the stuff out.
Post some pics once you have established the tank.:naughty: :woot: :clap :headbang2
