New 55 gallon...what would you do????

I agree with the Mbuna suggestion. I have a 55 gallon Mbuna tank that I love. As in my tank, you can have a great variety of colors coming from your fish. I can sit and watch this tank for ever because these fish have great personality. They are always chasing, digging, or trying to mate.

thanks again for all the help, this site is terrific...i know i'm definitely going to get some altos and some tropheus, and i'll be looking into the rest of the suggestions to see what i like, i'm still new to the african cichlid thing so i have to look up all the names you all have given me. i guess my last question is, where should i purchase the fish?? my local fish stores have some of the species mentioned, but they don't look very healthy to be honest...is there a good place on the web to get africans????

well if you go with altos and trophs you cant get mbuna - just make sure you know that. Basically if you get mbuna or consdier them you can only keep them with mbuna b/c they are very agressive. Its prob. better in general not to mix tang and malawi specieces so just keep that in mind. =)

As for online places there are a few on the site that sell them and if you look on the web there are many places and wholesellers that sell them. I know that theres a place here The Aquarium I bleieve the website is theaquarium.com. The guy there is mad cool he hooks me up with all kinds of African cichlids he does mostly onine business, but thur-sun he has a shop a little outside of orlando with some real oddballs! Great guy - you should check out his site and see if he has any in stock.

great, thanks for the advice. i'm going to go with just tanganyikans, i think it would be cooler to just keep species from the same lake. just waiting for the tank to cycle and i'll be ready to go!!! i'll post pics when everything is up and running
