I am new to EBJD's. I just purchased this 8" big guy EBJD off Craig's list. It had outgrown the gal's (14 or 15 year old) tank and her and the Dad wanted to find a better home for it. The only thing I had was a picture to work with. Some of you may remember my prior post about buying this big guy. When we rehomed it a couple weeks ago I didn't notice issues with it's head--but I thought it seemed to be scared up. One person even commented about that in my previous post. I have him in my 55 gallon quarantine tank. I was croping some pictures of it and noticed he appears to have Hole In The Head (HITH). Do you agree? I read up on the post about it and determined a better diet and frequent water changes are in order. I know the previous owner was trying to keep it's size down by limiting it's amount of food. I of course don't know how often they did water changes but assume they did a pretty good job to get him to 8" from a fry. Yikes, I hope this guy will be okay!!! What comments do you have?
Thanks!!!

bad case of it as well. you should be able to clear him up in the long run with alot of water changes. id do 50 percent every 3 days and add aquarium salt. keep plenty on hand as you will be going through it quick with the water changes. i think if you do that it should clear up.

+1 to what fishguts said

theres always the meds you can get thatll do that trick
the meds are for the parasite that causes HITH, but this is very rarely the cause of most cases of HITH, for HITH that is due to being housed in porr conditions the only thing that will help is super clean water, salt, and time

The main active ingredient in many medications is salt...

Fresh clean warm water and a healthy (yet not overfed) diet can do wonders for a fish...

Adding a little salt is an option as well... Feel free to buy expensive meds, but for this concern their only benefit will be the addition of salt...

If I do a 50% water change which would equal about 25 gallons--how much salt should I add with each change?

Thanks

Dude that's not to bad. Extra water changes good food and differant kinds try veggie flakes cichlid pellets and frozen food. Clean water will be your best way to fight it. HITH can take a long time to heal but it does with time.

Have you met my rescue uaru. They look a heck of a lot worst then that fish. He will be fine HITH is not a death sentance if you treat it.

Here are my poor guys. I have had them for 2 weeks the fins are looking better but the holes are slow to heal. I have some fish vitamins to help them too. These guys are not even as bad as it can get.
