Just got a new 8 inch Texas cichlid and I had a few questions on how to properly care for it. Ive never owned a fish this big and I wasn't sure if their is anything I should be doing different.

1) how often and how much should I feed him? I've only had him for a couple of days and I've given him Large Hikari Floating Pellets and some blood worms and he seems to have accepted both of them.

2) At the store he was this amazing green but after I got him home he was completely washed out grey. I know this is normal but I was wondering if it takes longer for larger fish to adapt to their new environments. He had plants but he made quick work of those so now he doesn't really have anything to hide behind. Most of the time hell just sort of swim near a corner at the top like he's trying to hide. Every now and then hell cruise back and forth around the tank or kick up the rock. As far as the hiding goes I'm assuming this is normal behavior for a fish in a new environment?

3) I was thinking about it but I'm not sure if it would be ok to put maybe some smaller tetras in the tank with him. Just to kind of act as something for him to chase and to eat the food from the messes he makes. Also maybe to act as a buffer because the only other fish in there is a 7 inch pleco and every now and then the Texas tries starting a fight with him. The pleco holds his own so I'm not sure if its anything I should be concerned with.

Anyways thanks in advance to all that reply. Also he's in a 55 long if that matters.

Texas are lovely fish. I have a 7in one myself. Mine does pull up plants, so I put a few driftwood for it to hide behind. Regarding tetras, you'll have to find something that won't fit into its mouth and is fast enough. Giant danios have worked for me well.

Congrats Brianhellno, sounds like a great fish. PLEASE post some pics so we can see exactly what you are talking about. I would establish a hiding spot but for a fish like that you only need one and don't make it overberring. Just something he can stay behind if he or she feels the need to hide.

I would also feed multiple times a day. Really depends on the fish itself. I have Africans and I feed them at least 3 times a day. I have over 60 fish though and so their cycle is much different and they are all around 5 months old so much smaller.

The color will come back within 3 days but you may also check into the lighting sometimes that makes a difference in the fish's appearance.

Thanks for the post and good luck...

yeah get him plenty of stuff to hide in caves driftwood rocks

Sounds like the pleco may need a hiding space more than the Texas. Would love to see pics. That size tank, the texas may feel it's all his and doesn't like the pleco invading "his turf". There is a chance the texas may grow larger.

What kind of filtration do you have?

Very cool!!! Post pix!!

Wow I'm glad I asked for a little help. From what I understood I thought larger fish don't need to eat as much or as often and that you only need to feed them once a week. I was only feeding him once a day for now so ill bump it up to twice a day.

I have a piece of driftwood I can put in the tank that he can use to hide behind. He just bulldozed through the live plants though. Shredded them and everything.

As far as other smaller fish I think I'm gonna hold off on that for awhile and let him get comfortable.

Ill post pics later tonight when I get home. Also if someone could tell me if its a male or female that would be awesome. I think its a male from what ive read online but I'm not sure.

His color is starting to come back a little but he still looks pretty gray. For filtration there is a Penguin 200 and a Penguin 350 for three total bio wheels. I also do water changes every three days mainly because my other fish are very messy. Can anyone tell if its a male or female?
