Hi guys! have just taken the plunge and bought a new 8x2x2.5 tank with low iron/lead glass. I currently have a 5 ft tank running way too many fish using a 2200lph cannister with 12w uv, ozone injected by powerhead, overhang waterfall filter and weekly 50% water changes. I have a 4ft x18 x18 sump that i can build any way i want. I am keen on your thoughts on a 100% fluidized setup etc etc. Will still run the cannister filter and everything else but have no experiance with sumps. I will run the initial out put from the tank down through a 9liter 120micron sock filter after that i am open to ideas for the best way to utilise my sump. I have only just learned about fluidized sumps looking at sand and also k1, cut up drinking straws etc. Please help guys as am at a bit off a loss on the best way to tackle this sump Thanks Scott.

I have had great luck making fluidized sand filter out of 4 inch pvc. If you google diy sand filter you can find them. I just got some k1 so I can't comment on that yet, but it looks promising. I really like the idea of bed filters because you don't have to mess with the LOUD drip trays and media in motion just seems to work better being "self cleaning" so to speak

Just had a look at your build awesome :).
After making your 4" pvc fluidized do you think its worth while trying to fit a fluidized sand filter pre the sump and going with a wet dry sump ??, also everyone, sump plans etc would be great :)

Thanks! I just finished my sump on my 400 plywood build (that's what the k1 will be going in).

Check out that link if you build yourself 2 of those and use just a dab of silicone to hold them in place in the bottom of your sump you wont need a wet dry. (I put them directly in the sump and leave the return end open so it just waterfalls back into the sump). If you look at how much surface area for bio sand has compared to bio balls, scrubbies, ceramic ect you'll be amazed. Put 2 cups of sand in each fluidized filter and your good for a big bio load

How are you planning on doing your sump setup with the K1 ? just a big open space with 2 inlet at bottom and 2 outet at top with enough flow to move it continuasly? Cheers Scott

Ill have to play with it, but my sump is two 50 gallon totes hooked together. My plan is to have an 18g tote inside my sump with very little flow 150-200gph and lots of air bubbles that way the k1 should boil easily without being disturbed by sump current

Let me know your thoughts on this setup, realy like the idea of the refgium as my fish destroy plants and could run cherry shrimp etc. I think i would still incorporate one of the fluidized filters you have made and still run through the 9l 120 micron sock before entering the sump. Do you know if light affects fluidized sand or is the movement so great that it will stop any undesirable algae etc,
thanks for sharing your info :) cheers again Scott
