I just bought a new 90 gallon last week for my cichlids. Have been wondering about those Python Siphons I hear about. Are they really worth it? Would it be a good idea to use that to clean this tank each week? Sounds like it would save me a ton o trips with those buckets!!

I have a window about 6 feet from the tank and could run the old water outside or water my plants with it, then fill the tank from the tap right?

Thanks

I have never used the python. I have a 90 gallon and a 55 gallon. although I have heard that they are very useful. you don't have to, but many people recommend getting one.

i have been using it for some time and love to use it. if you do not have a garden hose buy it. you still need something to siphon the gravel or waste that sits on the gravel or bottom of the tank. if the window is 6ft away, i would use the window to drain the water (that's what i do with my 180 gal-to my garden). i just don't like the concept of buying a hose and sucking on it and letting it drain out.... if you studied microbiology you know why i don't like it. there is just too many things you can get that you might regret.:)

i dont get it? isnt that what the pythons for? :grinno:

cup your hand and put it between your mouth and the hose, now suck.
poof,no mouth on hose. :D

After playing with buckets for a few years I decided to give a python a chance...I will never go back! I drain from the tank into my tub and then fill from my spray attachment for the shower. Draining the tank with a pump is faster however it is much faster filling up with the python. I wish I would have shelled out the cash years ago!

The difference to me is how easy it is, connecting directly from my tank to the toilet, which i most of the time make it go to my bucket for 5 gallons. Also, there is a difference between a wet floor with 2 inches of water and a clean dry floor. Even though i spill alot with the bucket, carrying full- to rim water, the python makes alot ezier. Also, with my 25 ft hose, I was able to clean my tank, from the inside of my house to barely outside my house, cleaning out the sand. You should really get it its awesome.

I use a 3/4"(I.D.) goodyear rubber hose, attach the gravel cleaning part from my python to it. It sucks water much faster and I don't leave the sink faucet running. I start the suction with the faucet and turn it off, gravity does the rest. Filling the tank back up is so much faster with a 3/4" hose. I tested it on my 125g and took 15-20 minutes with the 3/4" while it took over 45 minutes with the python's hose.

If you plan to use a 3/4" rubber hose (commercial grade) run hot water thru the hose a couple of times to get rid of any crap in there.:grinno:
