Hello Salt MFK,

I just picked up a 90 gallon acrylic tank, which I intend to stock with SW predatory fish.

The tank is un-drilled, therefor I picked up a Eheim 2227 (Wet/DRY) for filtration.

I would like some guidance as to the following:

1) Do I still need a skimmer? If so, can you recommend one?

2) Can I get away with just Live Sand? Or, is Live Rock a must? Want to keep the tank "sand bottom"...

3) The EHEIM Canister has bioballs and ceramic rings, Would you suggest I use a different Media? Could I use Live Rock Rubble (and would eliminate the need for Live Rock all together) as media?

4) Do I need additional equipment, vital to the setup?

Thank you for the input!

Live rock I would say is a must, and for a 90gal you will need plenty my friend. Should probably start with around 75lbs. You can get sand that isnt live(per say) at your LFS and the live rock will seed it in time. Protein skimmer is highly recommended. I'm using a coral life brand. No problems with it. Hope this helps

sammy pretty much hit the nail on the head, my personal opinion though I dont think that u will need a skimmer thats more or less for reef tanks so it wont hurt the tank not to have one.as far as the media goes I think what u have is fine the bioballs work well for biological filtration and the ceramic work well for biological.Make sure u have some type of sponge filtration for the mechanical part, polyfiber and some type of carbon based to help polish the tank.but im sure the filter u have should have that already just make sure u have some on hand to use as it will get old and wear out,but u can reuse this for a while. just make sure that the filter pulls more water and filters it then whats in the tank basically the more filtration the better. Also with the wet dry u have, that is great for live bacteria, vital for the fish to live,a few water pumps wont hurt more water flow equals beter quality water,do u have a RO/UNIT? these help a ton to remove any unwanted crap that is in your water.
