Hello guys,

I am so excited to say that I am purchasing a 90 gallon wide Tank with stand and Fx5 filter. Needless to say, this will be an upgrade for sparky, my Delhezi Bichir. So, the tank is 48”x24”x18”. Obviously, there is a lot of width to this tank. I want to have large fish. However, because it is not 6 feet long, I can’t have monster bichirs. What bichirs can I fit with him? Are there any other oddballs that would be cool to add? I want most, if not everything to be African.

A polleni cichlid would be cool, but I’m not sure if they need more height.
Sens can go with dels typically without issue.
African butterflies are great.
Leopard ctenopoma, krib cichlids, killies, lots of options. Extra width really opens up a lot of options.
If you want to go out of Africa, you could stock it with some medium sized Central American cichlids or go South American and look at some nice characins.

Do you know of any other bichirs besides sens? I would love a South American characin In a mix! Perhaps the bottom patrollled by bichirs, and midway up some nice characins. What type of characin would be good?

From what I have been told you can keep most cb bichirs in a 4x2 footprint as even most cb lower jaws start slowing down once they get 18"+.
Don't worry about it you can always sell them or upgrade if and when they do get that big. Just get the bichirs you want :),how about a lil baby endli? :grinno:

Teulg is similar sized but rarer. I don’t know bichirs that well though.
For characins, based on water type, silver dollars and chalceus would be cool. I’ve seen success with red wolves and bichirs, but it’s just as likely that either one goes nuts on the other.
Definitely some fast large dither would be good, bigger and less mean than the congo tetras.

Do you know the dimensions of Sparky's mouth? A good way to get safe tankmates is to get fish that are too girthy to fit in it, and you'll have an easier time with that if you know how big it is.

As for tankmates, maybe an African knife? Good African oddball for a 341 L in terms of size.

Sparky is not that old. Got him last november around 3". Mouth is very small. Almost not able to eat the 6" fish Sinking Cichlid Pellets.
