just got home from looking at fish after work. Petsmart has 3 pike of no name for sale, 9.99 each. i think there xingu 1. kind of a brownish tan, spots on head, pin stripe that runs from gills 3/4 of the way down the body, and a bright red thin stripe on the very tip of the dorsal fin. Anyway i was debating cause my largest tank besides a pond is a 55 and theres no way that 3 pike should be in a 55 when my phone rings. A guy i do business with for work called me to tell me that his son has a 90 in his garage that leaks somewhere near the top, comes with a stand and i can have it for free if i just come and get it. needless to say now im gonna razor blade and re-sylicone the tank and go spend $30 on the pike and hope to get a male female pair out of them. this has got to be the luckiest day ive had in a long time.

Sounds like a fun little plan you got.

You will enjoy the pikes younger years, for if they are X1's, they get nasty as they sexually mature.
At least mine did.
I actually regret keeping my sveni over that girl.

Good luck man.

They could possibly be Venezuela. They look exactly like the Venezuela in the identification thread. would $10 a piece be right for venezuela?

Yeah good price.
They are still Lugubris-types, so just keep an eye on them and anything smaller than them.
Especially as they grow.

From the words of Vinny Kutty......."Once pair bond has been established, the pair does not harm each other, but unpaired fish and sub adults are viciously intolerant of each other.Juveniles are easy to keep and gregarious but with maturity comes an ontogenic color change and a drastic loss of aquarium manners. This is when most aquarists give up on this species. A large tank with numerous hiding places and some luck may result in a compatible pair."

looking forward to seeing what ever you decide for the 90....

Indeed those do sound venezuelan. They are great pikes, just not horribly attractive as adults. Since you just gotta new tank, why not let it set up for a while and wait around for some other pikes. Or you could order some. PetSmarts frequently get in Crenicichla sp. 'xingu I' and Crenicichla johanna. Both of which will be more attractive as adults, don't get nearly as large as the venz.

Its really your call though!!! If you want the venz then go for them!! They are a very rewarding pike for sure! :D Actually ANY pike is a rewarding pike, but cha know, I'm kinda biased!!

they said they've had them for a while and i dont see them going anywhere soon. they hide in there stuff in the tank and you cant see them at all and there's no label on the tank. they will prob stay there for quite some time.

i wont put pike in the tank first by the way, ill bring in pond water, and some of my goldfish to get the tank going for about a month, then ill ship out the goldfish and bring on the pike. and if those happen to be gone ill just have to wait around for some tapajos 1 and order away.
