just got the email from the seller.....
Ray:
I was out all weekend - just read your email.
There are 2 ways to handle this. You can call the trucking company to file a claim. They will ask you for all of the packing materials and send you a claim form to fill out. After you fill out the paperwork and get any packing material around that you might have left, you can mail the claim in. After a week or so they will respond with a letter that says you signed for it in good condition, therefore your claim is denied. After you get mad and your blood pressure goes up, you can get back to them and they will tell you to file a claim for "concealed damage" and you'll wait again for a week or two. They will either deny the claim again or offer you a minimal amount that will cover maybe 10% of the cost.
I know this all seems very unfair. I'm sure they get their share of claims where the item is improperly packed or the customer breaks it after they deliver it. They don't like claims any more than you do. Even if they run over a tank with a fork lift, I am lucky to get my cost recovered.
This brings us to option #2. The crack is minor, but I believe it should have some attention. The tank should be installed on a solid surface offering full support, so structurally it should be fine. I can come down on Saturday afternoon and glue some pieces of acrylic in the cracked area to beef it up. They will be glued to the inside surface but shouldn't affect any fittings or equipment, but they will add additional structure and help prevent the crack from spreading.
I sincerely apologize for the problem. I thought several times about throwing it in my truck and bringing it down myself. As you can see, I pack all of my shipments very well and it costs me a good amount of money in materials and labor. I'm not happy when these situations occur either.
Decide what you want to do - I'll wait to hear from you.
