new acrylic tank cracked

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If you got it from E Bay it will be insured and you will be protected. If you got it on a credit card it is protected as well. If you don't know anything about the seller you should just wait to talk to him, don't do anything to it or you could void any warranty or they could say it was mishandled. also you should report it to the courier to let them know it was broken during shipping.

Actually, eBay does not insure anything. Insurance is through the mail or freight carrier only. If you pay the seller for insurance but the seller does not pay the carrier, then it is left entirely between you and seller. Also eBay does not handle disputes over damage during shipping. For that matter, eBay has very little power in dispute resolution and over all they are not very good when you have a bad seller or buyer.

my new tank just arrived yesturday and late last night when i was intalling the bulk heads i noticed it was cracked!!!

does anyone know if this can be repaired or am i screwed? i havent been able to talk to the seller yet.

here are the pics of the crack. it just one crack and it goes about half way through.

Xrayz, you need to contact the delivery company first thing Monday morning. Do not wait. If you wait, you will be left holding the bag. The delivery company handles the insurance claims and must be notified at (or near) the time of delivery. Of course you still need to contact the seller.

thank you all for your concern and advice.

i am still trying to get a hold of the seller, must be closed on the weekends :(
and i will contact the shipping company in the morning... even though the location of the crack suggests to me it was done at the time of manufacture.

i havent touched the tank either. i will wait to see what they both have to say.
i will keep everyone posted.

thanks again everyone.

just got the email from the seller.....

Ray:

I was out all weekend - just read your email.

There are 2 ways to handle this. You can call the trucking company to file a claim. They will ask you for all of the packing materials and send you a claim form to fill out. After you fill out the paperwork and get any packing material around that you might have left, you can mail the claim in. After a week or so they will respond with a letter that says you signed for it in good condition, therefore your claim is denied. After you get mad and your blood pressure goes up, you can get back to them and they will tell you to file a claim for "concealed damage" and you'll wait again for a week or two. They will either deny the claim again or offer you a minimal amount that will cover maybe 10% of the cost.

I know this all seems very unfair. I'm sure they get their share of claims where the item is improperly packed or the customer breaks it after they deliver it. They don't like claims any more than you do. Even if they run over a tank with a fork lift, I am lucky to get my cost recovered.

This brings us to option #2. The crack is minor, but I believe it should have some attention. The tank should be installed on a solid surface offering full support, so structurally it should be fine. I can come down on Saturday afternoon and glue some pieces of acrylic in the cracked area to beef it up. They will be glued to the inside surface but shouldn't affect any fittings or equipment, but they will add additional structure and help prevent the crack from spreading.

I sincerely apologize for the problem. I thought several times about throwing it in my truck and bringing it down myself. As you can see, I pack all of my shipments very well and it costs me a good amount of money in materials and labor. I'm not happy when these situations occur either.

Decide what you want to do - I'll wait to hear from you.

Thanks,

That sounds very fishy ...

I'd try #1 before I'd have that monkey play with glue ...

Actually sounds like a good reply.. Was it a company that built it.. And also when dealing with this kind of stuff they are correct you should keep the deliverer there while you open and inspect something of this fragility.. SOme drivers get mad at me.. But they don't say much cause i can be pretty convincing that it is in their best interest to stay:naughty:

IF it was a company i would go over the conditions that you signed or agreed to in the purchase agreement. and look at their return poilicy. There is nothin fishy about not wanting to give a customer who signed the paper saying they receved the merchandise in good condition.. I would personally go get wome weld-on #3 if it is a tight crack heat the area with a hair dryer not hot just warm it up and drop the weldon #3 in it.. by tomoroow it will have pulled back together and look almost like it wasn't there :)
