Mandarin, Fl
There is a local company here in town called Jax Fish rescue (http://www.jaxfishrescue.com/). It's a non profit company who takes in aquariums people no longer want or can deal with. I've been buying water from them for the last month or so because it is half the price of my LFS. well while I was there he mentioned he had a Green Mandarin and I had to have it. So I picked him up and he seems to be on in my tank. However I know these guys can be difficult and picky eaters. Can anyone give information/ advise for this particular fish? I'll post pics as soon as I can get a shot lol. they like to hide and tend to be nocturnal...

Hopefully you have an established tank with a huge pod population.

Mandarins are one of the small fish that I really want for my 72 but have to keep myself from getting.

tank has been up for several months and not much pod population. i will be getting some today in a bottle. I have an AC110 that I will be modifying to be a refugium as well. That way I can grow a population

You will need to supplement most likely always in a tank that small in mind.
You mean by adding more copepods?

I was wondering... I added them to my tank today but wouldn't they just get sucked up by the ac110? are they small enough to where they won't get affected by the filter?

I'm gonna do the refugium mod later this week... I just want to make sure he has something to eat for te time being. Will he eat mysis?

Most likely no he will not eat mysis. You will have to keep supplementing with pods quite frequently in a tank this small. These fish aren't recommend for small tanks despite being small in stature because they need to be able to consume a ton of pods to stay alive. Think more like a 125 gallon than a 30 gallon.

Most of the retail information says 20-30. Now that i've been gathering info most hobbist have told me larger 55+. Why can't I just have a copious amount of copepods? I also read they will eat brine as well... I added some to the tank and he seemed to come out and it looked as if he was eating. Kinda hard to tell with his small mouth.

I am determined to keep this guy and keep him healthy. i am doing the refugium mod to my ac110 tonight and I will get Chaeto tomorrow. Do i need to get additional copepods to put in there (I just got some today)

Just like anything else, you can only sustain a certain amount of them in a certain amount of space. The Mandarin will also decimate them at a much higher rate than they can reproduce. That is another reason you need to have a fully mature tank.

They may eat other foods, but they have to learn to accept it and they generally don't. They can be fed anything just like any other fish, but they have to actually eat it. Brine shrimp has no nutritional value so getting them to eat that would only be used as a step to get to mysis and other things.

I would put some in the new refugium so they can multiple in there quickly and then essentially drip themselves into the tank to be eaten.

You will be successful if you provide good water quality and he chooses to take other foods. If he only wants to live off of copepods you are probably screwed.

They are a tough fish to keep, but a fun one. you should have a large refugium if you want to make it easy.

Well i am gonna do my best. I feed mysis to my tank regularly so hopefully he'll pick up some small bits. I know the issue is their mouth is small so they need very tiny food. Other than eating habits, anything else I should know?
