New Addition of Firemouth

Just picked up a firemouth from my LFS..it's around 4-4.5inches..can anyone sex it? the dude at the LFS says its a male..this is my 1st ever firemouth so I dont know much about them..

Edit: Do you guys think his fin will grow back?

I had one with a tail like that and it never grew back. I think its a male from its head shape.

I would say it's a male, based on the long finnage and the deep red on the throat; females have the same coloration, but IME it is more subdued

looks like a good fish, personally I wouldn't expect the tail to heal . . . but it's also not major damage, just aesthetics . . .

I'm going on male too.

The tail fin will probably grow back a little bit more, but there will always be a split I think.

Thats an awsome FM, the colours are great. I have a pair but the colours are not as vivid.
I would say that is a male from the streamers on the fins. My female's fins are very blunt in comparison.

Awesome red.... haven't seen one with that much red. Def makes me think male with the extension of the dorsal fin..

Just saved 2 from a BigBox in the last 72 hours, from washed out to colored up nicely... Hope they get that much iridescence in the fin. The tail may grow back in just make sure they are getting all the vitamins and minerals along with protein in their diet....
