You have sand as substrate right? Those are live plants right? Are they anchored on the driftwood? Can you keep live plants without substrate and just have them "tied" or anchored to something? Thanks.

Yes, sand right now. The plants are either on the bottom because of the weight of the rootball or weighted down with lead weights.

I was going to use a plant substrate throughout the tank but I'm not so sure I'm going to be able to keep many plants rooted with the endli in there. Now I'm considering using a long and narrow tray with plant substrate towards the back of the tank for a few larger plants.

You could in theory attach plants to driftwood and seom, like anubias and java fern, would do quite well that way. Other plants need soil to root in.
