new african acting strange

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
WOW! Im seperating them this week, my lungfish still isnt eating.. i tried today, ill try earthworms tonight maybe. his color is good but hes not moving hardly any even which i move him to see if hes alive but if i move him out in the open he crawls and thrashes back behind his rock.. i posted a topic about some changes i made to the aquarium and all my worries in one topic in the main ancient fish forum. thanks for the help guys!

As Madding said in your other thread, lungfish sometimes go on hunger strikes for no apparent reason then just resume eating.

What size of aquarium do you have it in again?

right now just a 75, getting a larger aquarium around Christmas.

Thanks for all the help, ill separate them monday when i can get a new aquarium. thinking maybe a ten gallon or so filled about halfway with a heater and some sand from the main tank ( i heard they like sand..? ).. what about plants or decor, maybe just a few rocks or so? and hes really hardly moving like i said, is this common... anything else i should do?

Get it a 20 gallon long and fill it most of the way; it will house it longer than a 10 gallon plus it might move around more.

Give it a fair bit of sand; try mounding it on one side to make it a bit easier for it to get air. Smooth gravel can also be used as a substrate, too. I've kept them on both substrates and each has its pros and cons.

As for other decor, avoid rough and sharp edges; they can get abrasions somewhat easily. Tough live plants such as anacharis or Elodea will be a useful addition because they'll give it some cover as well as helping maintain good water quality. A piece of large diameter pipe can be used to give it a cave if desired; you could disguise it by attaching smooth gravel with aquarium silicone.

Remember that they tend to rearrange their decorations and substrate, so don't expect anything to stay in one place for long if it's not sufficiently weighed down.

I also recommend maybe taking a night to gather any questions you have and all them all to an existing thread instead of making a new one every time. People are going to start answering the same questions in multiple threads and getting frustrated. Also the moderators probably don't like a flood of new threads from one member.

Just keeping bumping your ancient fish thread with questions about either your arowana or lungfish and I am sure people will help.

x2. Personally, I would have one thread in the "Arowana" sub-forum for the arowana and have this one in this sub-forum; you'll get more replies that way since the "Ancient Fish" forum doesn't get that much traffic.

thanks guys and sorry about the double posting, i got the lungfish eating earthworms yesterday.. he only takes them when i hand feed him, he doesnt really go after them.. he grabbed my finger the first time lol!

It's good to hear it's eating now. You'll have to be careful about getting bitten by it when it gets bigger; they can do some real damage once they get to a decent size.

hes already bit me twice! he drew blood. he only takes food if a hand feed him though for some reason.`

Ya, you have to watch with them. I used to have a WAL that was a little bigger than yours, and it clamped down on my fingertip and fingernail when I was doing some maintenance in its aquarium. I was able to lift it completely out of the water with my finger before it decided to release its grip!

See if you can get it to take food from tongs and then work on getting it to just eat food off the bottom.
