Hi everyone, i joined this site to learn more than the basics. im not new to keeping fish but i am new to keeping the larger aquarium fish. I recently bought a juwel rio 180 of which has an eheim pro 3 2075 for filtration and now house a really good looking 8 inch tiger oscar. If anyone has knowledge or hints on how to keep an oscar happy and healthy please let me hear it. Thanks.

A few Basics:

1) don't feed them feeder fish unless you breed them yourselves, they tend to carry parasites and goldfish have a chemical thats bad for them

2) make sure to do regular water changes, he's gonna be really happy in that 180 but you still have to keep up with your water changes

3) have variety in the diet, get him on a pellet food as a staple but also substitute things in like frozen krill, silversides, occasionally maybe some market shrimp pieces or tilapia fillets when you see it on sale

Welcome to MFK i'm sure lots more members will chime in on this :P

Welcome, I take it your in the UK seeing the brand of tank you got. Is that a 180 liters?

+1 Goldfish are cold water fish that contain practically no nutritional value plus their high amounts of fat can cause your O to develop fatty liver disease. I'm not sure if there is any "chemical" they have biologically that is bad for O but they are definitely prone to many diseases and parasites, as you stated, that they can introduce to your O.

Also if this is 180 LITERS isn't that like 40 gallons? If so then this tank is too small for even a single full grown Oscar. EDIT: (saw the responses while typing this one) At 8" this tank is already too small for your O. I'd bring him back where you got him until you physically have a sufficient sized, cycled, tank to house him in. First O, you definitely don't want to start on the wrong foot putting him in a much too small tank.

Well before i decided to spend roughly £500 on the tank and equipment i did alot of research on the requirements of a single oscar fish. I came to the conclusion providing the best water quality is the key as oscars are known for being messy fish. I know how big these fish can get and i dont intend on moving him to a larger tank. He will have enough room to smim and do as he pleases even if he gets to 14 inches. Water quality is more important than and extra 6 inches swimming space.

Just so everyone knows. I do weekly water changes of 30%. Im also really carefull not to over feed him. He gets all he wants for 3 min twice a day. Hikari gold and frozen fish 2 times a week. Have had no issues what so ever when it comes to water quality.

Oscar do get large mate, i had an 18 inch guy he was 7 years old though, he was in a 4 x 18" x 2foot high, i just got told by the local store it would last him for life how wrong they was, but not many oscars get that large i would say id expect 12-13 inch off him, mine was a wild oscar so that might make them grow biggerdue to wild strane, i feed him prawns about 5 every 3 days , cichlid pellets floating types, lance fish, earth worm and he had one or 2 guppys but i would not recomend you do that , its before i new what i was doing.
