you know that aint gonna work?
what happens on the bottle ones is the fish go in and they go around the edges when trying to get out. htis one there is no edges.it may work but i doubt it.

What?

Care to elaborate?

Exactly!!!

It's an extrapolation of the original idea from the early 60's, and should work rathe well in still waters.

Geez guys... there is nothing wrong with it. Even if it doesn't work that well, it probably didn't cost him anything and is an additional arsenal to his sample collecting.

Im not going to pretend that i know much about catching fish with traps....however.....

My father is a commercial fisherman and he catches lobster/stone crab/blue crab here in south Florida (Biscayne Bay), an all of his traps look more like wire or wooden cages that look more like this...

of course, I understand that your purpose is a little different. But i would like to point out that when you pull these traps out of the water....they drain very quickly...trapping the lobster/crabs and consequently fish (looking to eat the trapped lobsters and crabs) who can't swim out of the funnels fast enough........

Looking at your design, we can see that the water will drain out of the bottle openeing anyway, but it would probably be beneficial to have extra drain whole punched @ the height of the lowest bottle entrance to help the water drain out as fast as possible. This will help keep from the small fish being sucked out of the bottle entrances. ? does this make any sense.

In any case i would say the punch holes near the top to allow for the thing to sink faster and to fill completely with water.
